I’m putting myself in a box of shame. 🤦 I hadn’t realized that this review wasn’t up yet…so here’s my review of the Boxycharm April 2020 box! Better late than never, I hope! 😬

BoxyCharm is a monthly beauty subscription box. There are three boxes you can sign up for:

  • BoxyCharm Base Box: 5 full-size products for $25, which is offered every month.
  • BoxyCharm Premium: 6-7 full-size products for $35, also offered every month.
  • BoxyLuxe: once-a-quarter upgrade of the base box featuring at least 8 beauty and lifestyle products for $49.99. If you upgrade to a BoxyLuxe, you will not be getting a base box for that month.

This box is for…getting full-size products for a great price!

Price: $25 per month. Find the latest coupon here!

FIRST IMPRESSION

An open BoxyCharm April 2020 box

This month’s box was a bit frustrating for me. Current BoxyCharm subscribers can usually choose an item to receive in the following month’s box. I had chosen the Elemis Superfood Cica Calm Cleansing Foam. However, I received the Elemis Superfood Cica Calm Hydration Juice instead. I contacted their customer service, and I was told that my choice item wasn’t recorded.

Subscriptionado paid for this box.

ON TO THE ITEMS!

  • Box of The Porefessional Hydrate Primer
  • The Porefessional Hydrate Primer

Benefit Cosmetics – POREfessional Primer: Hydrate Primer

Size: 22 mL

RV: $32

My go-to primer is the original Porefessional primer. I love it because it has a matte finish, and it keeps my face from looking oily for several hours. This Hydrate Primer is supposed to function like its predecessor but with an added 12-hour hydration.

Sadly, I didn’t like this as much as I do the original primer. It minimizes pores like the original formula, but I notice a lot more shine on my skin, especially a couple hours after application. This primer might be good for someone who battles dryness, but it’s definitely not for my combination skin.

  • Elemis Cica Calm Hydration Juice

Elemis – Superfood Cica Calm Hydration Juice

Size: 50 mL

RV: $48

I’m usually a fan of Elemis, but this product just doesn’t work for me. Despite being marketed for dehydrated or sensitive skin, I think it’s too harsh. I’ve noticed an increase in redness and irritation, especially on my cheeks. After giving it a try for a couple of weeks, I had to stop. My skin looked and felt raw every time I used this.

  • Iconic London Illuminator
  • Iconic London Illuminator

Iconic London – Illuminator

Size: 13.5 mL

RV: $41

The theme of this box is “Festival Vibes”, so this product was a perfect fit. This illuminator can be mixed with moisturizers or foundations to give your skin an extra “oomph”! If your skin tends to get oily throughout the day, I suggest using this sparingly. I just dab a little bit on the high points of my face, like my cheekbones. I think it works wonderfully!

Iconic London – Plumping Lip Gloss in Peek-a-boo

Size: 5 mL

RV: $26

Since this was not a brand takeover box, I wasn’t too excited to get two products from the same brand. It would have been forgivable if they were both great products, but this one is a miss for me. While I love the sheer baby pink color, the formula was far too tacky. Long after I applied it, I could feel it sitting on my lips.

It has a nice, cooling effect, which is much better than the stinging sensation of some other “plumping” formulas. However, it also smelled like licorice to me, which is not a scent that I like.

  • Illuminati eye pencils
  • Illuminati pink pencil
  • Illuminati blue pencil

Illuminati Cosmetics – Gel Paint Duo in Electric Pink & Blue

Size: 1.4 g each

RV: $42

This product is also a great fit for the “Festival Vibes” theme. I can easily imagine wearing this at the Firefly Festival, which is held near where I live! Unfortunately, this event has been canceled this year. And with bars, nightclubs, and other party venues shut down (rightfully so), I’ve had no reason to wear this outside.

I did try this out at home a couple of times, and I think it’s pretty fun! They’re perfect for the floating eyeliner trend, although I don’t have enough confidence to wear that outside during the day. Kudos to those who can flaunt it anytime!

Anyway, props to BoxyCharm for putting more bold makeup items. There are only so many neutral shades a girl can have!

FINAL IMPRESSION

All the items in the BoxyCharm April 2020 box

The BoxyCharm April 2020 box was, overall, a huge disappointment. I really wanted the Elemis cleanser, which I think would have been a better match for my skin than the hydration juice. Aside from the eyeliners, everything else in this box was a little boring.

Favorite Item: Illuminati Cosmetics – Gel Paint Duo in Electric Pink & Blue

Highest Value Item: Elemis – Superfood Cica Calm Hydration Juice ($48)
